If you measure it carelessly, you either hide real PV losses or blame the panels for energy the controller chose not to take. Soiled sensors, missing curtailment records and mixed-up data can trigger contract penalties, hide failing strings and inverters, and start disputes with your EPC contractor or your lenders that drag on for months.
USP&E Helps You Track Solar Performance Ratio on Hybrid Plants
We know that on a hybrid plant, a fair performance number depends on keeping PV performance and firming dispatch apart. With 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, USP&E puts 400+ engineers and project managers behind you; they design, measure and report performance so solar plants and gas turbine generators are each judged on what they actually control. You get ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified quality and safety systems, with FCPA and OFAC compliance on every contract. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not need a new metric. You need sensors you can trust, a method everyone agrees on, and records that show when the PV was limited by something other than its own health.
Measure Irradiance and Temperature Properly
Install irradiance sensors in the plane of your modules, plus module temperature sensors, in positions that represent your plant. Large or split sites need more than one station. Keep a horizontal sensor too, so you can cross-check your readings and compare with weather data.
Maintain those sensors as carefully as the modules. A dirty or misaligned pyranometer makes your plant look better or worse than it is. Clean them on a schedule, check alignment, and recalibrate them as the supplier recommends.
Flag bad data instead of quietly filling gaps. Your performance report should show which periods used real readings, which used backup sensors and which were excluded, and why.
Agree the Method and Separate Curtailment
Agree the performance ratio method and the data it uses in your contracts before the plant runs. Decide how temperature correction, availability, grid outages and curtailment are treated. A method agreed at the start avoids most later disputes.
Record every curtailment event, export limit and firming dispatch decision with its time, duration and reason. When your hybrid controller holds back PV because the turbines are carrying a minimum load or the grid has asked for less, that lost energy should not count against your PV performance.
Track inverter and string availability every day. Many performance drops come from a handful of tripped inverters or failed strings, and daily checks catch them while they are still cheap to fix.
Review Trends and Report Fairly
Review your performance ratio trends every month. Look for gradual declines that point to soiling or degradation, and sudden drops that point to equipment faults. Find the cause of each change and record what you did about it.
Report PV performance and turbine performance separately, then together. Your lenders want to see the PV doing its job; your offtaker wants to see the whole hybrid plant delivering firm power. Clear reports serve both without mixing them.
Hybrid compute campuses face the same reporting question. Under hyperscale EPC/O&M, solar sits beside AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA can firm later phases with its own metering. Your natural gas engines/stations, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines should be reported just as clearly.
USP&E Offices Serving Solar EPC Buyers
You should not have to explain your load profile three times. For your solar EPC and gas firming project, USP&E links one accountable team across its offices, starting in the US: Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) for US-side engineering, site walks and equipment follow-up.
London (162-168 Regent Street) sets up commercial structure and finance, Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) leads design, project controls and quality for PV blocks, natural gas engine firming and GT bridges, Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) adds engineering depth, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) expedites switchgear, transformers and balance-of-plant from Chinese manufacturers.
For hybrid solar performance tracking, Colorado Springs and Knoxville engineers can review your sensors, contract method and dispatch records, then set up reports that separate PV losses from firming decisions. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. With 25,000 MW contracted since 2002 across 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, USP&E is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
Proof from Recent Solar EPC Projects
You want proof that USP&E has delivered gas turbine and hybrid projects judged on clear, honest performance. These projects show that record.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
- NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.
HowTo: Track Solar Performance Ratio on a Hybrid Plant
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your sensor layout, contract method and dispatch records under NDA. 2. Receive a measurement review and reporting template. 3. Track, review and report every month under accountable O&M.
- Install and maintain irradiance and module temperature sensors in the right places.
- Agree the performance ratio method and the data it uses in the contract.
- Record curtailment, grid limits and firming dispatch so they are not counted as PV losses.
- Track inverter and string availability every day.
- Review performance ratio trends every month and find the cause of any drop.
- Report PV and gas turbine generators performance separately and together.

FAQ: Solar EPC Performance Ratio With GT Firming
What is a solar performance ratio?
USP&E describes performance ratio as the share of energy your modules could have produced from the measured sunlight that actually reaches the meter. It strips out weather, so you can judge the health of the plant itself. Contracts and lenders often use it to measure performance.
Why is performance ratio harder on a hybrid plant?
USP&E sees hybrid controllers curtail PV when turbines must hold a minimum load or when the grid asks for less. That lost energy is not a PV fault. Without clear dispatch and curtailment records, your performance ratio can blame the panels for decisions made elsewhere.
How should irradiance sensors be maintained?
USP&E cleans irradiance sensors on a schedule, checks their alignment and recalibrates them as the supplier recommends. A dirty or tilted sensor distorts every performance figure. You should also flag periods of bad data rather than quietly filling the gaps.
Should PV and turbine performance be reported together?
USP&E reports PV performance and turbine performance separately, then together. Your lenders need to see the PV doing its job, while your offtaker wants firm hybrid output. Separate reports keep each party informed without mixing PV losses with dispatch choices.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support solar EPC projects?
USP&E supports solar EPC projects from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, where engineers plan hybrid plants and firming. London handles contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town support African sites, and Wuxi follows up modules, inverters and equipment made in China.
Has USP&E delivered gas turbine and hybrid projects before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. The public NEOM case study covers zero-hour gas turbines supplied by USP&E as the single technical and commercial interface. You can review both records with your own engineers.
Is USP&E a broker for solar or turbine projects?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E designs, builds and maintains solar and gas turbine plants with its own engineers, so the team that sets up your performance tracking is the same team that reviews your trends each month and answers for your plant’s output.
How fast can USP&E respond to a performance review?
USP&E can start reviewing your sensor layout, contract method and dispatch records as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag faulty sensors and missing curtailment records first, so your next monthly report is fair, accurate and defensible to your lenders.
Judge Your Solar Plant Fairly
